Pittsburgh, PA: Arrive at Pittsburgh’s Waterfront where you will lodge at the Courtyard by Marriott; dining will be on your own just steps from your hotel at the former Homestead Steel Works which is now home to a popular dining, entertainment and shopping district.
Pittsburgh, PA to Ohiopyle, PA (67 miles): Breakfast at Courtyard Marriott; start with a tour of the “historic pump house” at the Trailhead; a Steel Heritage guide will pedal with you through the most industrialized part of the trail featuring the history of Pittsburgh Steel to Little Boston; stop at the Trailside in West Newton for lunch; tonight you will lodge at the Yough Plaza Motel in Ohiopyle; clean and comfortable; an Ohiopyle tradition; dinner will be at the Ohiopyle Café.
Ohiopyle, PA to Cumberland, MD (70 miles – of which 25 miles is an effortless downhill): Breakfast will be at Yough Plaza Motel’s Café (it’s a couple blocks from the motel); lunch will be at the town of Rockwood at the Rockwood Mill Shoppes; this is 25 miles into your trip so enjoy lunch but please have some snacks packed for the rest of your day; tonight you lodge at my B&B - The Inn on Decatur; dine at my favorite…Ristorante Ottaviani’s.
Cumberland, MD to Hancock, MD (60 miles): Breakfast will be at my B&B - The Inn on Decatur; I will pack for you my “Hit The Trails” lunch; lodging tonight will be at the 1828 Trail Inn; dinner at Weaver’s; homestyle cooking and great pies.
Hancock, MD to Shepherdstown, WV (48 miles + 5 road miles): Darlene will have breakfast for you and will send you on your way with a picnic lunch; tonight you will lodge at the world class Bavarian Inn overlooking the Potomac River; tonight enjoy dining on your own at one of the many great restaurants in Shepherdstown including The Yellow Brick Bank, The Three Onions, etc.
Shepherdstown, WV to Washington, DC (70 miles): Breakfast at the Bavarian Inn; we highly recommend an early start so that you can stop and visit Harper’s Ferry, just 10 trail miles into your journey; stop for lunch in the railroad town of Brunswick at the very popular Beans in the Belfry; your journey ends in Georgetown; the 0 mile marker is by the Thompson Boat House.
