A Tale of Two Trails
(A Great Weekend Getaway)
Day 1: Arrive in Cumberland, MD; your lodging will be at The Inn on Decatur; stroll downtown (2 blocks away) where you can enjoy dining and “Friday After Five” where live entertainment is provided at our open air pedestrian mall.
Day 2: (32 mile pedal) Rise to breakfast at our B&B, today you will pedal to Paw Paw, WV on the C&O Canal Towpath where you will travel through the 3,118 foot tunnel (bring a flashlight…it’s dark); I will pack one of my Hit the Trails lunches; we will pick you up at the other end of the tunnel; back to the Inn for an evening of relaxation; tonight you can enjoy entertainment at Canal Place or catch a live theatre performance at the Cumberland Theatre.
Day 3: (32 miles) Another hearty breakfast starts your day; today we will shuttle you to the town of Meyersdale, PA where you will hop on the Great Allegheny Passage; from here on it’s a great downhill pedal back to Cumberland; today lunch is on your own; I suggest coming out at Frostburg for lunch and relaxation; back to Cumberland where you will pedal 4 short blocks back to the Inn

West Newton: arrive in West Newton to lodge at the Scarsdale Cottage Inn & Bright Morning b&b; dine on your own at one of the little cafes or pizza shops in town
West Newton PA to Ohiopyle PA (42 miles): start you day with a hearty breakfast at your Inn; picnic lunches will be packed to keep you pedaling your 42 miles today; tonight you will lodge in one of the guest houses in Ohiopyle or the local motel; enjoy dinner at the Falls City Pub Ohiopyle PA to Meyersdale PA (42 miles): breakfast will be at the Firefly Grill; this morning those of you that would like to experience Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater will be shuttled for the 1.5 hour tour; while others may want to White Water Raft or just hang out this is a very cool rafting town; hop on the trail and travel 10 miles to my favorite town, Confluence….here you will enjoy lunch at the Lucky Dog Café…tonight you will lodge at the exquisite Levi-Deal Mansion in Meyersdale PA; dinner will be at the White House Restaurant
Meyersdale PA to Cumberland MD(32 miles): a gourmet breakfast will be served at your b&b; today enjoy the downhill coast to our town of Cumberland MD; today lunch on your own by either packing something “to go” from Sheetz’s, lunch in Frostburg…or if your belly can wait; in Cumberland you can eat at one of our café’s…tonight you will dine at Ristorante Ottaviani’s …while in Cumberland let’s have your bikes serviced at the Cumberland Trail Connection Bike Shop (if you rent…this is where the rentals will come from)…time for a great historic walking tour of downtown …I have owned tour companies for 15 years, I will do your tour; tonight you will lodge at my b&b the Inn on Decatur www.theinnondecatur.net and at other b&b’s in town
Cumberland MD to Little Orleans MD: (42 miles): breakfast will be at your b&b, I will pack my “Hit the Trail” lunches; your will start your journey on the C&O Canal; a packed dirt trail with some pot holes and roots; tonight you lodge in Little Orleans at an amazing b&b, Town Hill Inn (circa 1916), sits on a mountain with a view of (3) states, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania; the Innkeepers will you shuttle you up the mountain where your will enjoy a homestyle, gourmet dinner followed by the serenity of this place
Little Orleans MD to Williamsport MD (40 miles): a gourmet breakfast will be prepared by Donna; shuttle back to the towpath…22 miles of the journey can be enjoyed on the paved Western Maryland Rail Trail; stop in the town of Hancock for lunch at Weavers, since it’s part of your package we highly recommend the pie; tonight you will travel to Williamport; keeping it simple and lodging at The Red Roof Inn; we suggest dinner on your own at Tony’s Pizza
Williamsport MD to Sharpsburg MD or Shepherdstown WV (27 miles): start your day with breakfast on your own at the Waffle house, with just a 27 mile pedal, pack some snacks making it in time for lunch at your towpath town tonight you will lodge in the town of Shepherdstown (The Bavarian Inn) or Sharpsburg (The Antietam House or Jacob Rohrbach b&b Inn)…this evening you will dine on your own in the town of Shepherdstown or Sharpsburg; I can make plenty of suggestions – we also suggest a visit to Antietam Battlefield pedal, walk or enjoy the visit on a Segway with Tour Glides
Shepherdstown WV to Leesburg VA: (37 miles) breakfast at your place of lodging; just 12 trail miles from Shepherdstown, Harper’s Ferry awaits you; the place of John Brown’s Raid; you may want to consider a visit; today’s lunch will be at the Beans in the Belfry in the railroad town of Brunswick; at White’s Ferry take the last remaining ferry across the Potomac River (where at one time there where 100’s of ferry); this night you will lodge at The Norris House (innkeepers will shuttle you to their place) or possibly at the Best Western or Comfort Inn (both very upscale); a gourmet dinner will be enjoyed at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant or the Tuscarora Mills; if we lodge at one of the hotels dinner will be at The Blue Ridge Grill
Leesburg to Washington: (35 miles): breakfast at the Norris House…on to DC
This package includes 8 nights lodging, 7 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners includes taxes and gratuities Meal plan includes entrée, beverage and dessert (appetizers, soups & libations are not included) Luggage Shuttle with full SAG support including minor repairs & refreshment funished by Freedom Trail Riders
Price per person $1249 double $1699 single
Bike Rentals: $100 a week for a Specialized Comfort Hybrid…there is a fee to bring them to the starting point and transporting back to Cumberland…it’s nominal and based on where the shuttle service is heading that day
This is a self-guided trip: maps, brochures, contact information will be provided to each guest. The only limitation on your time will be per the shuttle service that will have designated meeting points along trail/towpath.
All efforts will be made to adhere to stated itinerary but at times, like substitutions may need to be made.
Meals include an entrée, beverage and dessert. Wine, liquor, beer and the like are not included. Appetizer and soups should be enjoyed on your own.
SAG support includes basic repairs…additional services at bike shops on the trail/towpath and transportation will be at the discretion of Freedom Trail Riders to charge accordingly.
Any additional transportation needs are chargeable fees by Freedom Trail Riders.
A non-refundable 20% deposit is collected 60 days prior to trip.
All side trips i.e. Fallingwater, Segway Tours etc are extra and not included in the trip fee. The walking tour in Cumberland with me is included in your price…I guess I am free.
