Pedal, Ponies and Civil War History Family Trip

2012

 

June 24-29 (Sunday – Friday)

 

Day 1: Deal, PA to Cumberland, MD (25 miles):  Today’s journey starts at the crest of the Eastern Continental Divide (the highest point in the state of Pennsylvania; 2,390 feet above sea level) with an amazing downhill “coast” to Cumberland; stop for lunch at the Trail Inn in Frostburg; the Thrasher Carriage Museum is fun to visit, over 50 antique carriages and sleighs; tonight you will dine on your own at one of our local restaurants  (something for every taste and every budget); you will either lodge at my B&B or the New Fairfield Inn and Suites.

Day 2: Cumberland, MD to Oldtown to Little Orleans.MD to Buck Valley Ranch (25 miles):   This morning awaken to breakfast at your place of lodging; you will be shuttled to Oldtown; you will pedal from Oldtown to Little Orleans; I will pack a picnic lunch for you today; from Little Orleans you will be shuttled to Buck Valley Ranch; here you will enjoy dinner prepared by Nadine...tonight you will lodge at the guest house; the guest house has two baths (1 shower) and 4 bedrooms.

Day 3: Tuesday Buck Valley Ranch to Hancock to Williamsport to Shepherdstown (25 miles) (Jefferson County WV): Breakfast will be served at the Ranch; this morning enjoy a horseback trail ride at the Ranch; today you will be shuttled to Hancock; enjoy lunch at Weaver’s start your pedaling in town of Hancock;  from Hancock to Ft. Frederick you can travel the paved Western Maryland Rail Trail and then back on to the C&O Canal today’s pedal will end in Williamsport at the Cushwa Basin; you will be shuttled to Shepherdstown were you will lodge at the Clarion Inn in the quaint town of Shepherdstown; dinner this evening will be on your own.

 Day 4: Wednesday Shepherdstown, WV to Harper’s Ferry, WV (12 miles) (Jefferson County, WV):  Enjoy breakfast at the Clarion Inn; this morning you will be shuttled to Antietam Battlefield - 23,000 casualties in one day; the most during the Civil War; enjoy lunch in Shepherdstown on your own; pedal 12 miles to Harper’s Ferry; spend the afternoon exploring Harper’s Ferry or possibly enjoy a float down the river in inner tubes; the float folks can pick you up from Harpers Ferry; tonight you will lodge at the Comfort Inn and dine at the Secret Six Tavern (fine for children).

Day 5: Thursday Harpers Ferry, WV to White’s Ferry/Leesburg, VA (25 miles):  Breakfast  will we served at a local breakfast cafe; you may opt for an early start or spend more time exploring the town of Harper’s Ferry; today lunch will at the Beans in the Belfry in the railroad town of Brunswick; you can eat there or pack lunch to take with you; later this afternoon you will cross the Potomac River on White’s Ferry (a neat experience - nominal fee) to Leesburg…this is the last remaining ferry which was once a fleet of 100’s; you will call the hotel shuttle before you board the Ferry…tonight you will lodge at the Best Western in Leesburg; dine at the Blue Ridge Grill.

Day 6: White’s Ferry/Leesburg, VA to Wahshington, DC (35 miles): A breakfast buffet will start your day; shuttle back to the towpath; today you may want to stop and enjoy Great Falls, here you can visit Great Falls Tavern offering interpretive programs, enjoy a canal boat ride pulled my mules and the beauty of the falls themselves; there is also a concession stand here where you can picnic on your own; based on how fast you can travel; remember this is a 25 mile pedal so you may want to pack snacks…you can end your trip at this point or pedal 12 more miles to Milepost 0 at Thompsons Boat House.
